The Best of British - a humorous guide to British slang and vocabulary.

Cedarseed's Human Type Tutorials - a series of in-depth tutorials on how to draw people of various ethnicities. Really useful for writers as well!

HowStuffWorks - information on everything from automobiles to witness protection. Very useful.

LunarBerry.com - contains the Liber a Nomen, a naming dictionary sorted by meaning, with an emphasis on the unusual.

Name Voyager - extremely fun and useful visual guide to names based on spelling, popularity, and decade.

Online Etymology Dictionary - word origin and history for tons of words, common and uncommon.

Patricia C. Wrede's Worldbuilder Questions - really useful questions to help writers fill in the details of life in a fictional world.

Parenthood.com - Baby Names - another good resource for character names.

Rich Hamper's Character Profile Sheet - the mother of all character profiles. A good way to explore characterization and keep details straight.

RhymeZone - rhyming dictionary. Great for writing over-structured poetry.

University of Connecticut Plant Database Home Page - a good place to make sure that your natural landscapes really are natural. Includes descriptions, origin, flowering period, etc.

WriteArt! - writing exercises and a good character profile form.


Web Design Resources

Evergreen - beautiful web graphics. It's a Japanese site, but just click on "material" and, with some patience, you'll be set.

Fullmoon Graphics - fun layouts for personal webpages and weblogs.

Netfirms - very cheap domain names ($5 a year.)

stock.xchng - very nice people around the world share their photography for oggling and personal use, for free.

Studio Blue Moon - layouts and mix-and-match graphics for your webpage. Really elegant stuff. Another Japanese site, but it's not hard to get around.

W3Schools Online Web Tutorials - my favorite reference for html and css.

The Budget Traveller's Guide to Sleeping in Airports - this site is strange but oddly fascinating. Reviews on sleeping conditions in airports and other public places across the world.

The Celtic Literature Collective - a fantastic collection of Celtic literature and mythology, including lots of obscure Welsh texts and an uber-handy encyclopedia.

exactitudes.nl - crazy awesome photographic art project.

Fiorituralibri - a neat collection of photos reminiscent of fictional characters.

FOUND Magazine - abandoned notes, letters, and pictures. Hilarious and poignant.

KryssTal - this personal site features incredibly in-depth information on lingustics, travel, living in the UK, math and sciences, cooking, and other sundry topics.

NetHack 3.4 Spoilers - if you've played NetHack and don't mind cheating a little, this site is godly.

Pictures of Walls - a gallery of walls, usually with interesting graffiti.

The Scribbler - magically turns doodles into art.

The SurLaLune Fairy Tales Site - lots and lots of fairy tale resources.

Ubuntu - my Linux distribution of choice. User-friendly and extremely free!

Urban75 - an e-zine with a terrific collection of photographs and panoramas of London.
